Four boxes for a new graduate

Four boxes for four kinds of grad, from $99 to $119. Three of the four come in two sizes. The larger size of one is that same box with about two more things in it, picked the way the rest of it was picked. None of them is a novelty and none of them has a year printed on it, because a thing with 2026 stamped on it gets kept for a year and given away in the second.

About the date, and the address

Convocation has a date and you know it while I do not, so there is no arrival date on this page and there will not be one. Shipping is free anywhere in Canada and takes 1 to 7 days in transit. I can't promise an exact arrival date. You can pick a preferred delivery date at checkout, which tells me when to send it rather than when it will land. If the day matters, order with room around it rather than up against it.

The address is the part people get wrong here more than the date. A lot of grads move out of a student place within a fortnight of the ceremony, so send it to wherever they will actually be standing in July rather than to the room they are already packing up.

These four stop where they stop because that is what these boxes cost, and padding one out to reach a bigger number would be the opposite of what this page says. Eight boxes on the site run a ladder of three sizes instead: $119 for the smallest, $189 for the middle one and $299 for the fullest box I pack.

If the graduation is the big one in your family and you want to spend properly, the two below go higher, at $299 each. Neither of them is a graduation box, so your card would have to carry the occasion on its own. Nothing on this page is a smaller gift for costing less.

The card is the part they keep

The box gets eaten, worn or used up. The card goes in a drawer and stays there. You write the message at checkout and I write it out by hand onto a plain card, and that card is the only thing in the box with words on it.

If you are stuck, people write things like:

The card is harder than the box on this one, because most people write the year and nothing else. A few you can send as they are, or change at checkout:

How to choose a graduation gift

Almost everyone buying one of these is older than the person opening it, which is the whole problem. The safe move is not to guess at taste. Pick by what happens to them in the month after the ceremony, because that is the only thing about a new graduate you can actually know from outside.

If they start a job in the autumn

If they have no idea what is next

If they did it the hard way

If they are moving into their own place

A lot of new graduates move in the same eight weeks as the ceremony. These are the boxes on this page that are for a kitchen rather than for a person.

What usually comes next

A graduation is rarely the only thing you buy for this person this year. The two things that follow it most often are a first job and a first place, and both have shelves here with boxes written for them.

If they have an offer already, the new job boxes are for the first week somewhere strange rather than for the ceremony.

If the degree came with a move, the housewarming shelf is the one to send from once they have an address that is theirs.

What do you give someone graduating from university?

Something useful in the month after the ceremony rather than something commemorative. A mug with a year on it gets kept for a year; a tumbler they carry to a new job gets used for five. Is a gift box better than cash for a graduation?

Cash is more useful and a box is more memorable, and which one is right depends on what they are about to do. If they are moving cities or paying off a loan, send money and write a real card. If they have money and nobody is marking the moment itself, send the box. Some people do both, with the card in the box saying what the money is for.

Where should I send it if they are moving out of student housing?

Send it to wherever they will be living after the move rather than to the room they are packing up. You enter the shipping address at checkout and it goes straight there, so you can send it to a parent house, a new apartment or the place they are staying in between. There is no price on anything inside, so it is fine for it to be opened in front of whoever is helping them move.

Can I send it straight to them?

Yes. Put their address in at checkout and type your message, and I write it onto the card by hand before the box is closed, so the note from you is the only thing in there with words on it.
