A SwipeGifts box is a physical, hand-packed gift, which makes it unambiguously a non-cash gift under the Canada Revenue Agency's administrative policy on gifts, awards, and long-service awards. There is no near-cash question to argue, the way there is with a gift card. Under that policy, non-cash gifts and awards given to an arm's-length employee are generally not treated as a taxable benefit when their combined fair market value, including taxes, stays at $500 or less per employee per calendar year. That $500 is an annual total across all the non-cash gifts the employer gives that person, not a per-gift figure, and it is an administrative concession rather than an exemption written into law.

Our Signature ($119) and Premier ($199) boxes sit well under that $500 line, so a single box at these tiers generally would not create a taxable benefit for an arm's-length employee, assuming the employer has not already used up the $500 room on other non-cash gifts that year. Luxury box ($349) still fits under the line, but it uses almost the entire $500 of room, so there is essentially nothing left for other non-cash gifting to the same person that year. The threshold does not apply to non-arm's-length people such as owners, shareholders, or relatives of the owner, where a gift is generally a taxable benefit regardless of amount.

If you are weighing a box against a gift card, note the rule changed in 2022. A gift card is not always taxable, but to stay non-cash it must be closed-loop (usable only at a named retailer or group of retailers), state on its terms that the balance cannot be converted to cash, and be tracked in a gift-card log the employer keeps. Miss any one of those and the card is near-cash and taxable no matter the amount. A physical box removes those conditions and the bookkeeping that comes with them, so you keep normal expense records and nothing more.

Whether your business can deduct the cost is a separate question from whether the employee is taxed. The two tests run independently, and deductibility depends on your own facts, so confirm it with your accountant rather than treating it as automatic.
