Four boxes I pack for an anniversary

Each of these is a different evening rather than a different version of one evening, and three of the four come in two sizes: the larger is the same box with about two more things in it. An anniversary gift is usually bought by the person who lives with the person opening it, which makes it the hardest one on this site to get wrong and the easiest one to leave too late. The same handwritten card goes in all four, and shipping is free on every one.

When to order it

I can't promise an exact arrival date, so order with room ahead of the date rather than up against it. An anniversary is the one occasion here where the buyer usually lives with the person it's for, so there's a second thing worth saying out loud: the box turns up at your door too. Have somewhere to put it.

Three of the four come in two sizes, and together they stop at $189, which is what these boxes cost, and I'm not going to pad one out to reach a bigger number. For an anniversary with a big number on it, take the larger size of one of these, and after that a different box rather than one of them padded out.

Neither of the two below is an anniversary box, so the card carries the year. Nothing on this page is a smaller gift for costing less.

You type the message when you order, up to 280 characters. I write it out in pen on a real card and set it on top. An anniversary card tends to get kept, in a drawer with the ones from the years before it, which is worth remembering while you're typing.

How to choose an anniversary gift

You know this person better than any guide does, so the only real question is what shape the evening takes. If you're marking it at home, the box is the evening, and it wants to be something you open together once the kids are down or the laptops are shut. If you're going out, the box is either what's waiting when you get back or what you hand over in the morning, so the day starts right instead of only ending well. Buying for someone else's anniversary, your parents or a couple you're close to, is a different job again: send something for the two of them and let them decide when to open it. A night in

If the year itself has been a hard one

Not every anniversary lands in a good year, and a box full of celebration is the wrong thing when it doesn't. These are the softer ones I make, from $99: warm rather than festive, and they say the same thing without the noise.

The three that came before this one

Engaged, showered, married, a year in: four occasions, the same two people, about eighteen months, and this is the one that comes round again every year afterwards. If you lived through that run yourselves, the other three shelves are a record of it. If somebody you know is in the middle of theirs, they are where to go next.

A first anniversary is a year to the day since the wedding, so the wedding boxes are the ones that were arriving at your door twelve months ago, by the tableful. The difference on the day itself is that this time yours is the only one.

Before that there was the week you told everybody, which lasts about a fortnight and then stops. The engagement boxes are for a couple standing at that end of the run, and nothing is expected of anyone yet, which makes them the easiest on this site to send.
