Four boxes for Eid

Four boxes, from $99 to $119. Three of the four come in two sizes. The larger size of one is that same box with about two more things in it, picked the way the rest of it was picked. All four are made to be opened in front of other people and passed round, because that is what happens to anything that arrives on the day. There is no alcohol in any of them.

About the two Eids, and the date

Eid al-Fitr comes at the end of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha falls about ten weeks after it, in the days of Hajj. They are different occasions and the whole calendar moves about eleven days earlier each year, with the day confirmed locally rather than set in advance, so no date is printed anywhere on this page. None of these four names one Eid or the other, so either works.

A box that arrives in the last few days before Eid is the easy one, because it can be put away and brought out on the day. Shipping is free anywhere in Canada and takes 1 to 7 days in transit. I can't promise an exact arrival date, so order with two weeks of room rather than aiming at the day itself. You can pick a preferred delivery date at checkout, which tells me when to send it rather than when it will land.

These four stop at what these boxes cost, which for something that is going to be opened at a table with ten people round it is the right end of the scale. Eight boxes on the site run a ladder of three sizes instead: $119 for the smallest, $189 for the middle one and $299 for the fullest box I pack.

For the household that hosts everybody every year, the two below are $299 each and are the largest I pack. Neither of them is an Eid box and both are for one person rather than a table, so the card would be doing the explaining. Nothing on this page is a smaller gift for costing less.

The card, and the greeting on it

Eid Mubarak is the whole card if you want it to be, and it is never wrong. The line worth adding is the specific one: which table you are missing, or which year it was that you were last there. I write whatever you type at checkout onto the card by hand before the box is closed.

How to choose an Eid gift

On a day when several households are visiting each other, the useful question is whether your box is arriving at the house doing the hosting or at the people doing the travelling. Those want different things, and both are easier to get right than they look.

For the table everybody ends up at

Two boxes from $99 to $119: the Eid Sweet Treats Box and the Premium Eid Celebration Box. Sweets and dates that can be put out when the door starts going, and in the fuller one something to serve them from. This is the box for the house that hosts, and it is the one I would send if you only know that there will be people there.

For the morning itself

The Eid Morning Tea Box at $99 or $119 is quieter and smaller, for the hour before anybody arrives. If you are sending to one person rather than to a household, this is usually the better fit.

For a house that was up very late

The Eid Celebration Box at $99 or $119 is coffee and two mugs, which is the honest answer to the morning after a night of cooking and a very early start. Nothing about it is ceremonial and that is rather the point.

If you are sending from outside the family

Food is the safe answer, Eid Mubarak is the right greeting, and short is better than elaborate. The grid above has boxes for a kitchen rather than a person if you are sending to a household you do not know well.

Where this one sits in the year

Eid al-Fitr closes Ramadan and Eid al-Adha comes about ten weeks later, so the month on either side of this day usually has something in it for the same household.

For the month before Eid al-Fitr, the Ramadan boxes are built around iftar and the meal before dawn rather than around a single day.

For the house that had everybody round, the thank you boxes are the plain way to say it afterwards, and the card can be two lines.

And for somebody spending the day on their own a long way from home, the thinking of you shelf has no occasion on it at all.

What do you send someone for Eid?

Something that can go straight onto a table when people arrive. Dates and sweets are the standard for a reason, and a box that gets passed round beats an object that has to be admired and then put somewhere. The Eid Sweet Treats Box at $99 or $119 is the one I would send.

Are these for Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha?

Either. They are the same kind of gift for both days: things for a table with people round it.
