Promotion gift boxes for a title that took a while to arrive

Most promotions get marked with a message in a channel and a round of replies with the same three words in them. The gap between that and what the person actually did is where a box is useful. It turns up after the announcement, it is addressed to them and not to the team, and the card in it says which part you watched.

Four boxes for a new title

Four boxes, from $99 to $119. Three of the four come in two sizes. The larger size of one is that same box with about two more things in it, picked the way the rest of it was picked. Three of them are built to sit on a desk and one is built to be taken home, which is the actual decision on this shelf: a promotion gift is opened at work far more often than any other gift I pack.

When to send it

A promotion is announced rather than scheduled, so there is no date to work back from. The useful gap is the week after the announcement. Everything in the first two days is public and slightly performative, and a box that turns up once that has died down is read as a person rather than as a reaction to a post.

I can't promise an exact arrival date, so if you want it there in a particular week, order at the start of it. Shipping is free anywhere in Canada and takes 1 to 7 days in transit. You can pick a preferred delivery date at checkout, which tells me when to send it rather than when it will land.

These four stop at what these boxes cost, and a promotion gift that gets much larger starts to read as something other than congratulations, particularly if it is travelling upwards. The card is the only part that is not generic

Everybody sends the same three words when a promotion is announced. The card is where you say which piece of work you watched them do, and that is the sentence that gets kept. You type it at checkout, I write it out by hand, and nothing else in the box has words on it.

Stuck on the card? People start with something like:

How to choose a promotion gift

A promotion gift is read differently depending on which way it travels. The same box sent up, down and sideways in an organisation means three different things, and the one thing that gets it wrong every time is picking on price alone.

If you report to them

Keep it modest and keep it shareable. The Afternoon Break Box at $99 or $119 is the safest of the four for this, because nothing in it is personal and nothing in it is expensive enough to look like an angle. Sign it from the team if there is a team.

If they report to you

The Desk Upgrade Box at $99 or $119 is the one that says the new role is real. Send it to their home rather than to the office, so it is theirs rather than a thing that happened in front of everyone, and write the card yourself.

If it is your partner

The Premium Fuel Box at $99 or $119 is for the person who has been carrying the extra work at home while the extra work at the office was going on. You know which part of it was hard. Put that in the card rather than the title.

If the team is going in together

The Elite Executive Box at $119 is the fullest one I pack for this, and a group can put one card in it signed by everybody. Nothing inside carries a price, so nobody opening it knows what anybody put in.

A promotion usually sits between two other things you will buy for the same person: the day they arrived, and the day they leave. Both of those have their own boxes here.

If somebody has just started instead, the new job boxes are written for a first week rather than for a title.

Questions people ask me

What is a good gift for someone who got promoted?

Something that sits on the desk the new title comes with, and a card that names the work rather than the job. The Desk Upgrade Box at $99 or $119 is the one I would send most often.

Is there alcohol in any of these boxes?

One of the four has it. The Elite Executive Box contains liqueur chocolates, and its own page says so. The other three have no alcohol in them at all. If the box is going into an office, or to somebody who does not drink, pick one of those three and nothing about the gift raises the subject.

Is it appropriate to give your boss a promotion gift?

It is, as long as it is small, shareable and signed. The thing that makes a gift upwards awkward is expense, not the gesture, so pick one of the modest boxes rather than the fullest one, and sign it from the team if there is a team to sign from. There is no price on anything inside, which takes the guesswork out of it for whoever opens it.

Can I send it straight to them?

Yes. Put their address in at checkout and type your message, and I write it onto the card by hand before the box is closed, so the note from you is the only thing in there with words on it.

Can we all go in on one box?

Yes, and it is the usual way for a team. Split it however you like between you, order it once, and write one message at checkout that I put on a single card. It goes out as one box with one card, so it arrives as a gift from all of you rather than as a pile of separate things.

Can I send a box back?

A promotion is the most public gift on this site. It gets announced, congratulated in a channel and then opened, quite often, at a desk in a room full of people who also applied. That is the reason these four boxes are what they are: nothing personal, nothing that has to be explained, and nothing that looks like it cost a fortune when the lid comes off in front of the team.
